The Bonda (or Remo) are one of the oldest and most isolated tribal groups in India, located primarily in the Malkangiri district of the state of Odisha. Recognized as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG), they have preserved much of their culture and customs for millennia.
They live in the remote mountains of the Bonda plateau, about 80 km from the town of Malkangiri.They speak Remo, a language belonging to the Austroasiatic (Munda) family.
Dress: Bonda women are distinguished by their shaved heads and for wearing large amounts of colorful bead necklaces and metal rings covering their chests, instead of conventional blouses.
Social system: Their social system is known for a unique practice where women often marry much younger men, so the women can take care of them as they age.
Livelihood: They practice a mix of settled agriculture and shifting cultivation (podu chasa), as well as gathering forest products.
Beliefs: They worship a supreme deity called Mahāprabhu.
