KURDISH People

The Kurdish people (or Kurds) are an ethnic group from Western Asia that shares a common culture, language, and identity, but does not have its own independent state. With an estimated population of 30 to 45 million, they are one of the largest ethnic groups in the world without a country of their own.

Geography and "Kurdistan"

They inhabit a mountainous region known as Kurdistan, which is divided among four countries:

  • Turkey (Northern Kurdistan): Home to the largest Kurdish community.
  • Iraq (Southern Kurdistan): They have an officially recognized autonomous region (the Kurdistan Regional Government).
  • Iran (Eastern Kurdistan).
  • Syria (Rojava or Western Kurdistan): They have established a de facto autonomous administration during the Syrian Civil War.

Culture and Language

Language: They speak Kurdish, which belongs to the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European languages (related to Persian). It has several dialects, with Kurmanji and Sorani being the most widely spoken.
Religion: Most are Sunni Muslims, but there is great religious diversity, including Shias, Christians, Jews, and indigenous religions like Yezidism and Alevism.
Newroz: The most important celebration in their calendar (March 21st), marking the New Year and the spring solstice, symbolizing freedom and resistance.

History and Politics

Struggle for Autonomy: After World War I and the fall of the Ottoman Empire, Western powers promised a Kurdish state (Treaty of Sèvres), but the promise was never kept, leaving the people divided.
Resistance: They have suffered decades of persecution and cultural assimilation attempts in various countries. A tragic example is the Anfal campaign in Iraq under Saddam Hussein, which included the 1988 chemical attack on Halabja.
Recent Military Role: Kurdish forces (such as the Peshmerga in Iraq and the YPG/YPJ in Syria) have been key Western allies in the fight against ISIS.
