NAGA People

The Naga people are an ethnic and cultural group made up of more than 30 tribes inhabiting Northeast India (primarily the state of Nagaland) and the mountainous regions of northwestern Myanmar. They are known for their strong warrior identity, rich oral tradition, and vibrant festivals.

Culture and Identity

Tribal Diversity: Each tribe (such as the Angami, Ao, Konyak, or Sumi) has its own language, dress, and customs. They are united by a common history and similar social structures.
Hornbill Festival: Known as the "Festival of Festivals," it is held every December near Kohima. It is a massive display of dance, music, crafts, and food where all tribes participate to preserve and showcase their heritage.
Warrior Past: In the past, they were famous as "headhunters," a practice linked to fertility rituals and social prestige that disappeared with the arrival of Christianity in the 20th century.

Religion and Language

Christianity: Today, over 90% of Nagas in India are Christian (mostly Baptist). The introduction of Christianity radically changed their society, eliminating ancestral practices but helping to unify the tribes.
Languages: They speak numerous Tibeto-Burman languages. Since tribes often cannot understand each other, they use Nagamese (an Assamese-based creole) or English to communicate.
Political Situation
Naga Nationalism: Since India's independence in 1947, various Naga groups have fought for the creation of an independent state called Nagalim (which would include territories from several Indian states and Myanmar).
Peace Accords (2025–2026): The peace process between the Government of India and Naga groups (such as the NSCN-IM) remains a central issue. In early 2026, negotiations are still ongoing regarding key demands like a separate constitution and an official Naga flag.

Economy and Lifestyle

Jhum Agriculture: They practice shifting slash-and-burn cultivation, although the Angami are famous for their complex systems of terraced rice farming.
Crafts: They are masters of shawl weaving (where each design indicates social status) and woodworking and bamboo crafts.
