RABARI People



The Rabari are a pastoral people from India and Pakistan, known for their nomadic or semi-nomadic identity and rich cultural heritage. Originally from the Thar Desert, they are now mainly distributed across Gujarat, Rajasthan, and parts of Haryana, Punjab, and the Sindh province.

Lifestyle and Culture

Traditionally, the Rabari have been dedicated to raising camels, sheep, and goats. While many have become sedentary, they still maintain ancestral practices that define them:
Traditional Attire: Men typically wear pure white with voluminous turbans (often red in Rajasthan or white in Gujarat). Women wear skirts and blouses with elaborate embroidery and often dress in black, especially those from the Dhebaria community.
Embroidery and Craftsmanship: Rabari embroidery is famous for its use of tiny mirrors (abhla), bright threads, and geometric patterns that narrate the tribe's history and mythology.
Tattoos (Trajva): Rabari women are known for their intricate tattoos on the neck, arms, and legs, which hold aesthetic, protective, and caste-identity value.
Social Structure: Their community is based living with strong kinship ties. The marriages are traditionally arranged. The customs are distinct for each subgroup.
Religions and Beliefs: Mostly are Hindu. They have a srong devotion to local deities and folk traditions. Animal care is often seen as a sacred duty.
