Nuba wrestling is a traditional grappling sport practiced by the Nuba peoples of the Nuba Mountains in southern Sudan. It is both a sport and a cultural ritual tied to identity, harvest festivals, community pride, and coming-of-age traditions. Some observers describe it as “the identity of the Nuba”. Historically, wrestlers competed nearly naked and covered themselves with ash or oils, though modern competitors usually wear shorts and shirts.
The Mesakin or Masakin are an ethnic group belonging to the large group of Nuba peoples.
