TURKMEN People



The Turkmen people are a Turkic ethnic group primarily associated with Turkmenistan, with communities also in Afghanistan, Iran, Uzbekistan, and elsewhere across Central Asia and the Middle East.

Overview

  • Language: Turkmen, a Turkic language closely related to Turkish and Azerbaijani.
  • Religion: Mostly Sunni Muslim.
  • Population: Around 7–8 million worldwide.
  • Traditional lifestyle: Historically many Turkmen tribes were nomadic or semi-nomadic pastoralists living on the Central Asian steppes and deserts.

Carpets and Weaving

Turkmen carpets are internationally famous for their geometric tribal designs. The carpet motifs even appear on the flag of Turkmenistan.

Horses

The Akhal-Teke horse is one of the oldest and most distinctive horse breeds in the world and is deeply tied to Turkmen identity.

Traditional Turkmen society was historically organized into tribes such as: Teke, Yomut, Ersari, Chowdur and Saryk

Modern Turkmenistan

Today many Turkmen live in urban areas, though traditional customs remain important in family life, music, hospitality, carpets, and celebrations. The capital city is Ashgabat.
